Kerala is home to the Southern Naval Command at Kochi (the Navy's training command), the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala in Kannur, Naval Ship Repair Yard and NPOL at Kochi, Naval Armament Depot Aluva, INS Dronacharya, Air Force stations at Akkulam and Sulur (across the border), Coast Guard district headquarters at Kochi, the Pangode and Kannur cantonments, Sainik School Kazhakootam, MES offices, and Army Recruiting Offices at Calicut and Trivandrum. This gives Kerala candidates two distinct defence job markets: the uniformed entries - Agniveer, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, CAPF, officer entries - which are all-India, and a substantial number of civilian central government posts at defence establishments in Kochi, Kannur, Thiruvananthapuram and Aluva, which are permanent Group C and B posts with pay under the 7th CPC and no Malayalam requirement. Agniveer: Army, Navy and Air Force

The Agnipath scheme is the main soldier entry. Army Agniveer (GD, Technical, Clerk/Storekeeper, Tradesman) is recruited through an online Common Entrance Exam followed by a rally at the ARO level - ARO Calicut for Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad, and ARO Trivandrum for the remaining districts - with a physical fitness test, medical and document check. Navy Agniveer SSR (Plus Two with Maths and Physics) and MR (SSLC) use an online exam (INET) with Kochi as a frequent exam and training centre; INS Chilka is the training base. Air Force Agniveervayu needs Plus Two (Science for the technical stream) with the STAR exam. Age is 17.5 to 21 at the time of application, service is four years, and women are eligible for Navy and Air Force Agniveer and the Corps of Military Police. Civilian defence jobs in Kochi, Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram

Indian Navy civilian recruitment for Southern Naval Command fills Tradesman Mate, Fireman, Multi Tasking Staff, Cook, Pest Control Worker, Lower Division Clerk, Storekeeper, Chargeman, Draughtsman, Scientific Assistant and Civilian Motor Driver posts in batches through the Navy civilian portal (SSLC, ITI, diploma or degree as applicable, age 18 to 25 or 27 with relaxations, all-India exam). Naval Ship Repair Yard Kochi engages ITI apprentices and hires tradesmen; NPOL and other DRDO labs recruit JRF, technicians and scientists; Naval Armament Depot Aluva and MES recruit tradesmen, supervisors and JEs; Sainik School Kazhakootam hires teachers, lab assistants and support staff; and the Kerala Ex-Servicemen Board and Zila Sainik Welfare offices post ex-servicemen-only vacancies. These posts are very stable and are searched much less than PSC posts.

Coast Guard, CAPF and Territorial Army

Indian Coast Guard recruits Navik GD (Plus Two Maths and Physics), Navik DB (SSLC), Yantrik (diploma in mechanical, electrical or electronics) and Assistant Commandant (degree) with Kochi, Vizhinjam and Beypore units, through a computer-based exam and physical and medical tests. The Central Armed Police Forces - CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB and Assam Rifles - recruit Constable GD through SSC GD (Plus Two, state-wise vacancies including Kerala), plus tradesman and technical posts through their own notifications; CRPF and CISF have units and group centres in Kerala. Territorial Army holds rallies for soldier posts (SSLC, age 18 to 42, employed or self-employed men) and an all-India officer exam for graduates. NCC Directorate Kerala hires Girl Cadet Instructors and civilian staff.

Officer entries and preparation

Graduates and Plus Two students have NDA (after Plus Two, through UPSC), CDS, AFCAT, Navy SSC entries, Coast Guard Assistant Commandant, CAPF Assistant Commandant (UPSC), Territorial Army officer and technical entries with GATE or engineering degrees. Preparation for soldier entries centres on physical fitness (1.6 km run, pull-ups, long jump, balance) and a general knowledge, maths and reasoning test; officer entries add English, current affairs and SSB interview preparation.
