Railway jobs in Kerala 2026 - the recruiting bodies

Indian Railways reaches Kerala through Southern Railway's two divisions - Thiruvananthapuram (covering the south and central districts) and Palakkad (covering Thrissur north to Kasaragod and the Nilambur and Shoranur lines) - and recruitment for them comes through RRB Thiruvananthapuram for exam-based posts, RRC Chennai for Group D and apprentices, and the divisions themselves for sports, scouts and cultural quota posts. Kochi Metro Rail Limited, a joint venture of the central and state governments, recruits its own staff, and the Kerala Rail Development Corporation hires engineers and project staff. RRB Thiruvananthapuram - the centralised exams

RRB exams are all-India but candidates apply to one RRB, and choosing RRB Thiruvananthapuram means the vacancies and postings in Kerala. NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) covers Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk, Trains Clerk and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk for Plus Two candidates, and Goods Train Manager, Station Master, Senior Clerk and Commercial Apprentice for graduates. Group D Level 1 is the largest recruitment, for SSLC and ITI candidates. Assistant Loco Pilot and Technician need ITI or diploma; Junior Engineer needs a diploma or degree in engineering; and paramedical categories cover Staff Nurse, Pharmacist, Lab Assistant, Radiographer and Health Inspector. All use computer-based tests, followed by skill or physical tests and document verification. Southern Railway apprentices, Group D and quota recruitment

The yearly Southern Railway act apprentice engagement through RRC Chennai is the easiest railway entry in Kerala: ITI holders in fitter, electrician, welder, mechanic (diesel and motor vehicle), carpenter, painter, electronics, refrigeration and other trades apply online, selection is purely by SSLC and ITI marks, and the trainees are placed in Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad division depots, the Palakkad carriage repair shop and stations across Kerala. Group D posts via RRC and sports quota posts (10th pass with state or national medals in listed sports) are advertised by the divisions. Scouts and Guides and cultural quota posts are small but rarely searched, which makes competition low.

Kochi Metro, K-Rail and railway PSUs

Kochi Metro recruits Station Controller / Train Operator (diploma or degree in engineering), Junior Engineer and Maintainer (ITI, diploma, degree), customer relations assistants, and executive and managerial posts on regular and contract terms, and its subsidiary Kochi Water Metro hires boat masters, engineers and operations staff. KRDCL hires civil, signalling and electrical engineers, surveyors and project managers on contract. RailTel and IRCTC list Kerala-based technicians, supervisors and hospitality staff, and Konkan Railway occasionally recruits for its Kasaragod-Mangalore stretch. None of these require Malayalam, but local candidates are preferred for operations roles.

Preparing and applying

Railway exams test general awareness, mathematics, general intelligence and reasoning, and (for technical posts) the trade or branch subject, in a computer-based test with negative marking. Physical Efficiency Tests apply to Group D and ALP. Age limits are generous (up to 33 for Group D and NTPC) with community relaxations, and the application fee is refundable after appearing for the exam.
