Teacher vacancy in Kerala government 2026 - the four routes

Kerala teacher recruitment happens through four separate channels, and candidates who track only one miss most of the vacancies. Kerala PSC fills permanent posts in government schools: LP School Teacher, UP School Teacher, High School Assistant (HSA, subject-wise), Higher Secondary School Teacher (HSST), VHSE vocational and non-vocational teachers, and Lecturer in DIET. Aided schools and colleges (which are a majority of institutions in Kerala) recruit through their managements, subject to government approval, and the vacancies are advertised in newspapers. Government colleges and universities fill guest lecturer and contract faculty posts directly, semester by semester. And central schools in Kerala - Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, Sainik School Kazhakootam, central university and IIT/NIT schools - recruit through KVS, NVS and their own notifications, with no Malayalam requirement.

Eligibility: KTET, SET, NET and BEd

Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test is compulsory for school posts: Category I for LP (Plus Two plus TTC/D.El.Ed), Category II for UP (degree plus TTC/BEd), Category III for HSA (degree in the subject plus BEd), and Category IV for language and specialist teachers. HSST requires a PG in the subject with 50% marks, BEd, and Kerala SET (or NET/PhD). College assistant professor posts need PG with 55% and NET/SET/PhD under UGC norms. Guest teacher posts in schools relax some requirements but prefer KTET-qualified candidates. Candidates should complete KTET or SET early, because Kerala PSC will not accept an application without it and the tests are held only once or twice a year.

Kerala PSC teacher recruitment - how it works

Each subject, medium and district is a separate category number. A notification for HSA Mathematics (Malayalam medium) in Ernakulam, for example, is independent of HSA Mathematics in Thrissur. Application is on Thulasi; selection is a written exam (subject plus pedagogy and general knowledge), sometimes an interview for HSST, then a rank list valid for a year or more from which vacancies are filled as they arise. Because subjects appear only when vacancies exist, a candidate should keep the Thulasi profile updated with KTET, BEd and SET details and apply within the short window when their subject is notified.

Guest lecturer, Samagra Shiksha and contract teaching posts

Guest lecturer vacancies in government colleges appear from June to August every year through the Collegiate Education department's centralised guest lecturer registration and individual college notices; universities and their departments advertise separately. Samagra Shiksha Kerala hires special educators, resource teachers, BRC trainers, counsellors and project staff on contract at the district level, and KITE hires IT trainers and master trainers. Government schools also appoint guest teachers against temporary vacancies through the school's PTA or the DEO. These posts are the fastest way for a qualified candidate to start teaching in the government sector while waiting for a PSC list.

Central schools and universities in Kerala

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan fills PGT, TGT and PRT posts through its national exam, with Kerala postings in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, Kannur and other stations; KVS and NVS also hire contract teachers locally each year. Sainik School Kazhakootam, NIT Calicut, IIT Palakkad, IISER Thiruvananthapuram and the Central University of Kerala recruit assistant professors and research faculty with all-India eligibility.
